GAMBIA: President Barrow’s Multi‑Million Dalasi Mosque Gifts Ignite Funding Debate

During the “Saturday Special Programme” Saturday night on AG Radio, Bun Dawda (Sulayman Ben Suwareh) provided an in-depth analysis of the millions of dalasis that President Adama Barrow is distributing to various mosques across the country. Bun Dawda cautioned Gambians that the origins of these funds have not been disclosed to the public, and President Adama Barrow has not clarified whether these millions of dalasis are from his personal finances or from other sources. The identities of those who contributed funds to the president from external sources remain undisclosed.

“Considering the substantial level of corruption within this government, the allegations of narco-trafficking associated with it, and the instances of confessed drug dealers closely linked to President Adama Barrow awarding medals to some of our men and women in uniform, it is evident that Muslims should carefully reconsider accepting these millions of dalasis from President Adama Barrow,” Bun Dawda stated.

Bun Dawda has raised concerns about President Adama Barrow’s religiousness, noting that the President has publicly admitted on several occasions, during live broadcasts, to engaging in graveyard witchcraft. This practice, as per Islamic teachings, is regarded to nullify one’s belief in Allah. For such individuals, financing mosque projects serves purposes beyond Islam.

Bun Dawda expresses concern about the emergence of new political parties in anticipation of the 2026 presidential election, lamenting the tendency for these parties to centre around a single leader rather than embracing collective leadership. This situation has persisted in The Gambia for a considerable extended period of time, contrasting sharply with the political landscape in Senegal. Bun Dawda cited PASTEF as an exemplary model deserving of following in their footsteps.

Bun Dawda advised UDP, GDC, PDOIS, and APP-SOBEYA that if they fail to build a party centred around leadership rather than relying on a single individual as the longstanding face of the party, winning an election may prove to be very challenging.

Bun Dawda suggests that if the opposition parties are genuinely focused on unseating President Barrow, the moment has arrived for each political party to collaborate and strive towards forming a robust coalition.

According to Bun Dawda, UDP served as the foundation for Talib Bensouda. Talib must exercise caution, as the timing for establishing his own party to run for the presidency next year is not quite right. Bun Dawda noted that Honourable Essa Mbye Faal believed the timing for his participation in the previous presidential election was right and the momentum was favourable. But we all knew right from beginning that the timing was not right even the momentum was favourable.

Bun Dawda remarked that questionable characters like Sambujang Njie and Joe Colley have been appointed at the ICE to advance the interests of President Adama Barrow, rather than those of the public. Without a united and strong coalition among the opposition political parties, Joe Colley and Sambujang will not shy away from manipulating the elections to benefit President Barrow.
