Lamin J. Darboe, a prominent lawyer, has formally entered the contest for the flagbearership of the United Democratic Party (UDP), becoming the most recent candidate to do so before the deadline of September 2nd.
Darboe now joins senior politician and party head ANM Ousainu Darboe and Kanifing Municipal Council Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda, who have both officially submitted their candidacy to lead the nation’s largest opposition party into the upcoming presidential election.
Lamin J. Darboe has previously indicated interest in the UDP leadership. He had already applied when the party was choosing candidates for 2021. But in a recent interview, he expressed his displeasure, saying that even though he met the standards, he was not given an interview at the time.
The UDP is anticipated to start the internal screening and selection procedures that will decide the party’s future standard-bearer as the deadline closes today. The UDP views the battle as a crucial step in getting ready for next national elections.
