Former Niamina East National Assembly Member Omar Ceesay has resigned from the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) with immediate effect, citing the party’s decision to align with President Adama Barrow and the National People’s Party (NPP).
In a resignation letter dated August 2, 2026, and addressed to the GDC’s senior administrative secretary, Ceesay said recent political developments had prompted him to reconsider his continued membership of the party.
Ceesay said he was grateful for the opportunity to serve the GDC and promote its ideals during his tenure as a National Assembly member. He described his departure as a difficult decision but said remaining in the party would conflict with his political principles.
Central to his resignation is his belief that no president should remain in office for more than two terms.
“This position is rooted in my commitment to democratic values, good governance, and the need for leadership renewal in our country,” Ceesay wrote.
He said he could not reconcile that position with the GDC’s current political direction following its alignment with President Barrow and the NPP.
Ceesay said resigning was the most honest and appropriate course of action available to him if he was to remain true to his beliefs.
Despite his departure, the former lawmaker wished the GDC and its leadership well in their future endeavours.
