The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has withdrawn its representatives from the Coalition Mediation Committee following disagreements over the proposed framework for an opposition coalition.
In a statement issued on August 3, 2026, the PPP said its secretary-general and party leader, Hon. Ousman Madikay Faal, had ordered the immediate withdrawal of the party’s negotiators.
The party said Faal had consistently advocated for a coalition led by a registered political party throughout the negotiations.
According to the PPP, a party-led coalition would strengthen democratic legitimacy, accountability and institutional stability while respecting the mandates given to political parties by Gambian voters.
The party expressed concern that an independent-led coalition could weaken political parties and undermine the country’s multiparty democratic system. It argued that adopting such a model could set a precedent for future National Assembly and local government elections, gradually eroding party identity and influence.
The PPP said its decision followed careful consideration of its constitutional principles and long-term vision for strengthening multiparty democracy.
However, the party stressed that its departure from the mediation committee did not amount to a withdrawal from coalition-building or cooperation with other opposition parties.
It said it would continue engaging with registered political parties that support the formation of a democratic, inclusive and party-led coalition.
“The People’s Progressive Party remains committed to dialogue, constitutionalism, national unity and principled political engagement,” the statement said.
