Mr. Ben Suwareh told AG Radio that the youth have numerous valid reasons to protest, as many issues remain unresolved in The Gambia. The youth take to the streets due to widespread corruption perpetrated by those we have entrusted with the nation’s affairs. The government ought to have been the last entity to engage in corruption.
The government’s handling of the assets belonging to former president Yahyah Jammeh has provoked widespread anger across the nation. For several years, the Gambian government has firmly declined to release the names of individuals who acquired the confiscated assets of Yahya Jammeh.
The young people are left with no option but to take to the streets, calling for the exposure of looters and criminals. Some political commentators estimate that Jammeh’s assets are valued at a minimum of one billion dollars. If this substantial sum of money had been invested in agriculture, food would have become more affordable. If it had been invested in our broken healthcare system, sick Gambians would not need to travel to Dakar for medical treatment.
The government has yet to account for most of Yahya Jammeh’s assets, which remain missing. Until a thorough report is available regarding what has been lost The list produced by the government will never earn the trust of Gambians. Mr. Suwareh remarked.
