Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta, has confirmed that parliament has received petitions lodged against Deputy Speaker Hon. Seedy S.K. Njie following the circulation of alleged audio recordings in which he is accused of making tribal remarks.
Speaking during a question-and-answer session at the National Assembly’s press briefing on Thursday, Hon. Jatta said the petitions are currently being processed in line with parliamentary procedures.
“Yes. The assembly is in receipt of one or two petitions against our Deputy Speaker, Hon. Seedy S.K. Njie,” Hon. Jatta said.
The Speaker explained that every petition submitted to the National Assembly must first be reviewed by the Office of the Clerk to ensure it complies with the Assembly’s standing orders and procedural requirements before any further action can be taken.
According to him, the petitions concerning the Deputy Speaker have already gone through most of that review process and are close to being finalized.
“Since we received those petitions, they have gone through the necessary procedures, and the process is almost complete for us to communicate the status of the petitions to the petitioners,” Hon. Jatta said.
He added that the individuals who submitted the petitions are expected to receive feedback soon. Should there be any need for amendments, additional information, or resubmission, the Assembly will communicate those requirements directly to them.
“I am hopeful that by tomorrow or thereabouts they should receive a response. If any changes, rearrangements or resubmissions are required, we will let them know,” he said.
Hon. Jatta stressed that the Assembly is treating the matter in accordance with its established procedures and that communication with the petitioners will follow once the review process is completed.
“As things stand, we have received the petitions, they have been processed, and we are close to providing feedback to the petitioners,” he said.
