AG Radio anchor Salieu Njie has warned that President Adama Barrow is likely to win the 2026 presidential election – not on the basis of his performance in office but due to the ongoing divisions and lack of cohesion among the opposition coalition parties.
Njie said Gambian politicians often work under the mistaken belief that a fractured opposition weakens the incumbent but history has proven otherwise. “United we stand, divided we fall” is as relevant today as ever, former U.S. President Abraham Lincoln echoed the principle when he famously said, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”
Njie says the road to victory for Barrow is becoming clearer by the day unless the opposition can come together behind a strong and formidable coalition. “Time is a very important factor in politics,” he said, “and as the elections approach, time is not on the opposition’s side.”
He contends that a consolidated opposition would not only threaten Barrow’s re-election bid, but also chip away at his base of support, undermine confidence in the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) and massively boost the coalition’s election prospects. But greed, division and lack of a common purpose however, remain hurdles to changing the leadership of The Gambia ahead of the December 2026 elections.
