Mamma Kandeh, the leader of the opposition Gambia Democratic Congress GDC, has criticised the government for failing to adequately tackle the underlying issues contributing to the increase in crime, resulting in an escalating feeling of insecurity among the populace.
The GDC leader expressed concern that The Gambia, once renowned as the smiling coast of West Africa, is now facing a troubling increase in crime and insecurity.
“In recent months, there has been a concerning rise in violent crimes that have become more frequent, leaving our citizens feeling unsafe in their homes and on the streets.”
“This reality casts a shadow over our beloved country, instilling fear in the hearts of every Gambian,” Kandeh stated.
He additionally mentioned that one contributing factor to this issue is the spread of drugs, which he believes is undermining the country’s social fabric, while the rising unemployment among young people is also influencing the increase in crime.
The GDC leader criticised the government for not offering young people the necessary opportunities to involve themselves in meaningful activities.
Kandeh stated that although the nation’s security forces are making significant efforts to combat crime, they are struggling due to a lack of essential resources to perform their duties effectively.
“The rising crime rate in The Gambia requires immediate focus from both the government and local communities. “A coordinated response to tackle economic disparities, enhance law enforcement capabilities, and promote community engagement is crucial for restoring safety and stability in the nation,” Kandeh stated.
He stated that a GDC government will adopt a collaborative strategy to tackle security challenges.
“We will create a unit to coordinate border security issues and leverage technology to address any lapses.” We will enhance incentives for our security forces to ensure they remain motivated and well-trained, enabling them to effectively carry out their responsibilities and enforce a stringent policy regarding criminal offenses,” he stated.
Mr. Kandeh stated that the government’s inability to implement effective measures indicates that the current political climate is harmful to sincere efforts in combating corruption.
He articulated that government officials prioritise personal interests over the well-being of the citizens, which he argued, weakens the battle against corruption.
The GDC leader asserts that without a dedicated strategy to address corruption, the nation faces the peril of worsening governance and diminishing public trust.
