President Adama Barrow on Friday presided over the swearing-in of Edrissa M. O. Faal as The Gambia’s new Chief Justice, marking a transition at the head of the country’s judiciary.
Speaking after taking the oath of office, Chief Justice Faal thanked President Barrow for the confidence placed in him and pledged to protect judicial independence, strengthen public trust and promote the timely delivery of justice.
He said his tenure would build on the legacy of his predecessor, Hassan B. Jallow, who recently retired after leading the judiciary through significant institutional reforms.
President Barrow praised Justice Faal’s decades of service to the rule of law in The Gambia and abroad. He also highlighted the new Chief Justice’s experience in international arbitration, noting that his expertise had served the country in legal matters over the years.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to an independent and adequately supported judiciary.
“We are resolved to resource them, to legislate in their favour, and to respect their absolute independence,” he said.
President Barrow also commended former Chief Justice Jallow for strengthening the judiciary and leaving behind what he described as a stronger foundation than any of his predecessors, expressing the nation’s gratitude for his service.
