Sergeant Modou Saine, a former aide to the Chief of Defence Staff of the Gambia Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Mamat O. Cham, has made serious allegations of corruption and misconduct against his former boss.
Speaking in an interview with Kerr Fatou, Sgt. Saine said he once maintained a close professional relationship with Lt. Gen. Cham, during which he carried out numerous personal and official assignments on behalf of the defence chief. According to Saine, the relationship later broke down, leading him to publicly accuse the CDS of unethical and potentially criminal activities.
Among the key allegations are claims relating to boats seized by the Gambia Navy, many of which were reportedly linked to irregular migration activities. Saine alleged that after the vessels were confiscated and prepared for public auction, Lt. Gen. Cham would interfere by assigning unusually low reserve prices.
He further claimed that the CDS would then facilitate the purchase of the boats for himself at only a fraction of their actual value, allegedly promising to pay the remaining balance later — payments that, according to Saine, were never made.
