President Adama Barrow has visited key National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) facilities in Brikama and Kotu as the government continues efforts to address ongoing electricity supply challenges.
During the visit, President Barrow said access to electricity is a right rather than a privilege and reiterated the government’s responsibility to provide reliable and affordable electricity to the population.
The President called on citizens to remain patient and support ongoing efforts to resolve the current supply constraints. He said available resources and reserves are being mobilised to address the situation, while concerns raised by consumers continue to receive government attention.
President Barrow also said improvements in electricity supply are expected by the end of October following the commissioning of a new generator. According to the government, the generator has already been procured and is currently being transported to The Gambia.
The visit comes amid continuing electricity supply difficulties affecting parts of the country, with authorities working to increase available generation capacity and improve the reliability of the national power system.
The government has also pointed to progress in expanding access to electricity over recent years. According to official figures, electricity access has increased from 36 percent in 2017 to about 90 percent currently.
The government says the President’s visit forms part of broader efforts to address the immediate electricity shortage while pursuing longer-term measures to strengthen the energy sector.
The administration is now expected to focus on the timely arrival and commissioning of the new generator, with improvements in supply anticipated from the end of October.
