President Adama Barrow has received former Senegalese President Macky Sall at the State House in Banjul as Mr. Sall continues diplomatic consultations in support of his ambition to become the next Secretary-General of the United Nations.
The meeting brought together the two West African leaders for discussions on Mr. Sall’s candidacy and the need for stronger African cooperation in international affairs. The former Senegalese president used the occasion to outline his vision for the United Nations and to seek President Barrow’s prayers and support.
Speaking during the engagement, Mr. Sall stressed that African countries must work together to strengthen the continent’s influence within global institutions and ensure that African priorities receive greater attention.
“As Africans, we must work together and focus our efforts on the key pillars of the United Nations: peace and security, human rights and sustainable development,” Mr. Sall said.
He indicated that unity among African states would be important as the continent confronts security challenges, economic pressures, climate-related threats and development concerns. He also highlighted the need for international cooperation in addressing conflicts and promoting peace, stability and sustainable growth.
Mr. Sall’s visit to Banjul forms part of a broader diplomatic campaign aimed at consulting political leaders and mobilising support across Africa and other regions of the world.
The meeting also reflected the close historical, political and diplomatic relations between The Gambia and Senegal. As consultations over the next leadership of the United Nations continue, Mr. Sall is expected to intensify engagements with governments and international stakeholders in the months ahead.
