Momodou Bah, also known as “Area,” the man accused of murdering university youth leader Ba Yunusa Mbye, has arrived at the High Court in Banjul to face the murder charge levelled against him.
Momodou Bah’s appearance at the High Court follows a ruling last Monday at the Magistrates’ Court, where Principal Magistrate Sallah Mbye determined that the court lacked jurisdiction to hear the matter.
The Magistrates’ Court had found that the charge of murder, which carries a penalty of death or life imprisonment, falls under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Special Criminal Division of the High Court by virtue of a directive from the Chief Justice.
The accused was remanded at the Mile 2 Central Prison pending his transfer and appearance before the High Court, in accordance with Section 228 of the Criminal Procedure Act.
The prosecution alleges that on the 15th of June 2026, at Fajara, Bah stabbed Ba Yunusa Mbye with a bottle on his neck, causing his death. The charge is brought under Section 155 of the Criminal Offences Act 2025.
