GAMBIA: Government Signs Contract for Banjul International Airport Modernisation Studies

The Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure has signed a contract with Concorde Aviation Intelligence to assess plans for the modernisation of Banjul International Airport, marking an initial step towards upgrading the country’s main aviation facility.

According to the ministry, the agreement covers feasibility studies, transaction advisory services, detailed designs for a proposed new terminal and a long-term development plan to meet anticipated increases in passenger numbers and airport operations.

The ministry said Concorde Aviation Intelligence, an international consultancy with experience in Africa and other regions, was selected following a competitive international tender launched several months ago.

During a preliminary meeting on Thursday, October 8, 2026, Transport, Works and Infrastructure Minister Ebrima Sillah assured the company’s chief executive, Jean Mark Bourreau, of the government’s support for the assignment.

Bourreau, for his part, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to providing technical expertise and advisory services to guide the airport’s proposed transformation.

The ministry said the agreement forms part of the government’s wider plans to improve transport infrastructure and strengthen The Gambia’s aviation sector.

“The engagement is part of the Ministry’s continued efforts to advance strategic infrastructure projects that strengthen The Gambia’s transport and aviation infrastructure,” the statement said.

The contract covers the preparatory work needed to determine the feasibility and scope of the proposed modernisation. The studies are expected to inform decisions on the terminal’s design, the airport’s future capacity and the longer-term expansion strategy.

However, the signing of the agreement represents a planning milestone rather than the completion of the airport upgrade itself. Further details on the estimated construction costs, financing arrangements and implementation timetable were not provided in the ministry’s statement.

The outcome of the studies is expected to help establish the technical and financial requirements for modernising Banjul International Airport as passenger demand and operational needs evolve.
