The Gambia Democratic Congress is expected to formally join the National People’s Party-led political alliance on Wednesday, according to senior party sources familiar with the negotiations.
The anticipated agreement would mark a major political realignment ahead of The Gambia’s presidential election scheduled for December 5, 2026.
Sources within the GDC said that the party’s leader and secretary-general, Mama Kandeh, is expected to meet President Adama Barrow to sign a memorandum of understanding formalising the alliance between the two parties.
According to the sources, the decision followed extensive consultations within the GDC and was reached after intense discussions among senior members of the party’s leadership.
The deliberations were described as robust, with differing views expressed over whether the GDC should enter into an alliance with the governing NPP.
Although the proposal was eventually approved, sources said it did not receive unanimous support, highlighting internal divisions over the party’s electoral strategy and political direction ahead of the election.
At the time of publication, neither the GDC nor the NPP had officially announced the agreement. Details of the proposed memorandum of understanding, including the responsibilities and commitments of both parties, were also not immediately available.
Should the agreement be formally signed, it would become one of the most significant political partnerships ahead of the 2026 presidential election and could reshape the country’s electoral landscape.
Kerr Fatou said it was continuing to gather further information about the negotiations, the internal debate within the GDC and the specific provisions of the proposed agreement.
