A delegation of senior Gambian officials, headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sering Modou Njie, held bilateral talks with the Minister of African Integration and Foreign Affairs of Senegal, Cheikh Niang, in Dakar.
The meeting took place at the Senegalese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was attended by senior government officials from both countries after the delegation had an audience with Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye.
The discussions focused on means of boosting the long-standing friendship and cooperation between The Gambia and Senegal. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace, security and stability along the common border and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
The latest developments in the border situation were discussed by the ministers, including the incident at the Bullock Military Camp. They stressed the need for peaceful resolution of all outstanding issues through dialogue, existing bilateral mechanisms and continued diplomatic engagement.
Both governments also pledged to preserve peaceful coexistence and mutual trust, which have traditionally characterised relations between the two neighbouring countries.
The consultations covered a number of bilateral and regional issues such as border management, defence and security cooperation, regional integration and implementation of decisions adopted during the Fourth Senegalo-Gambian Presidential Council.
The two sides stressed the need for closer cooperation between their technical institutions. They also called for more sharing of information, better coordination and timely implementation of agreements and joint initiatives.
Ministers Njie and Niang reaffirmed at the close of the meeting their commitment to deepen the strategic partnership between The Gambia and Senegal.
They agreed to continue to work closely together to promote peace, security, stability, regional integration and shared prosperity for the benefit of the citizens of both countries.
