The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China has officially handed over a newly constructed sports facility to the Office of the President, reaffirming Beijing’s support for sports development and bilateral cooperation with The Gambia.
It has a basketball court, tennis, volleyball, knee guards, PA system and other sports accessories for physical fitness and recreational activities.
The Chief of Staff, Alieu Loum, who received the facility on behalf of President Adama Barrow, thanked the Chinese Government for the donation and presented a certificate of appreciation to the Chinese Embassy, in recognition of its continuous support towards the development of sports and youth initiatives in The Gambia.
After the ceremony, Mr. Loum officially handed over the keys of the sports facility to the State Guards Battalion, which will take charge of its management and maintenance.
“This facility would serve as a valuable addition to the Presidency in that it would play an important role in enhancing the physical fitness, training and welfare of members of the country’s security services,” he said.
The handover ceremony was attended by the Chinese Ambassador to The Gambia, Ambassador Liu Jin, Secretary to Cabinet and Head of the Civil Service, Alieu Njie, senior officials from the Office of the President, and other invited dignitaries.
The donation is part of China’s ongoing collaboration with The Gambia to promote infrastructure development and to build stronger bonds between the two countries through initiatives to promote health, recreation and institutional capacity.
