Bundung Magistrates’ Court has delivered a strict sentence against a young woman for a “senseless” and “callous” act of violence.
Her Worship Magistrate R. Mendy sentenced Sainabou Bojang to four years of imprisonment after she was found guilty of pouring hot oil on a sleeping, alleged boyfriend.
The court heard harrowing details of the incident. Her worship stated that Sainabou Bojang acted without provocation. She took the time to heat oil and waited until the victim, Sulayman Savage, was asleep before pouring the hot oil over him.
Magistrate Mendy noted that the act showed a significant level of planning and following the attack, Sainabou Bojang attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended.
The medical evidence presented in court (Exhibit B) detailed the extensive damage caused by the assault showing severe burns to the left side of his face, neck, and upper limb. Magistrate Mendy further stated that Sulayman Savage (victim) was hospitalised for 13 days, requiring daily dressings and medical interventions.
Also, Magistrate Mendy observed that the victim remains in physical pain and emotional distress, noting that his physical scars will serve as a “constant reminder of the convict’s cruelty”.
While Magistrate Mendy acknowledged that Sainabou Bojang was a first-time offender who showed remorse and did not waste the court’s time by admitting to the crime, the severity of the “reckless” act demanded a firm response.
“No person has the right to inflict such injuries and pain on another person especially unprovoked,” the Magistrate stated, adding that the action fell into the highest category of culpability and harm.
Relying on Section 196 of the Criminal Offences Act 2025, Magistrate Mendy sentenced Sainabou Bojang to four years imprisonment; a compensation fine of D100,000.00 to be paid to Sulayman Savage for his injuries and pain and failure to pay the compensation will result in an additional month of prison time.
Magistrate Mendy concluded that the sentence is necessary to send a clear message to society that senseless violence will be met with the full force of the law. She reminds both parties of their right to appeal the decision.
