The Attorney General’s Chambers and the Ministry of Justice have confirmed that it has received the coroner’s inquest report into the death of Omar Badjie of Mandinarin Village and has requested the complete police case file from the Inspector General of Police as it begins a legal review of the matter.

In a press statement issued on 5th May 2026 fifteen days after Chief Justice Hassan B. Jallow forwarded the inquest record to the Ministry the Attorney General’s Chambers said the report had been transmitted for review and action, and that the Inspector General of Police had been requested to produce the complete case file for thorough legal review.

The Ministry signalled its intent to take the Coroner’s recommendations seriously. The statement declared that the recommendations including those about the possible prosecution of the implicated police officers would be reviewed, and that where the evidence warrants it, appropriate legal action will follow without reservation.

Omar Badjie died on 26th September 2025 following an encounter with law enforcement officers in Mandinarin. The coroner, Her Worship Anna O. Mendy, Principal Magistrate determined that he died from acute brain injury resulting from physical exertion, stress, and assault by the officers who were pursuing him. She recommended a referral to the Director of Public Prosecutions for consideration of criminal charges.

The Ministry acknowledged the weight of public feeling surrounding the case, stating that it is cognisant of the deep public concern arising from the matter. It urged the public to remain calm and allow the legal process to take its course.

The statement concluded with a commitment to uphold the rule of law and the rights and dignity of all Gambians.

The transition of the case from the Judiciary to the Executive branch marks the final procedural step before the public learns if the officers involved will face criminal indictment for their roles in the Mandinari death encounter
