The UNITE Party and the National Unity Party (NUP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Tuesday, establishing an alliance ahead of The Gambia’s December 2026 presidential election.
The agreement, signed during a ceremony attended by party leaders, officials and supporters, commits the two parties to closer cooperation based on democratic governance, national unity, accountability and inclusive development.
NUP leader Lamin J. Darboe described the alliance as a platform for meaningful political change and urged supporters to mobilise voters across the country. He said the partnership would promote respect for citizens, protect rights and ensure that victims of injustice receive fair treatment.
UNITE leader Talib Ahmed Bensouda said the agreement was more than an electoral arrangement, arguing that it reflected shared principles and a desire to improve the lives of Gambians. He said the alliance would focus its campaign on three major concerns: the rising cost of living, crime and corruption.
Both leaders invited other opposition parties and political groups to join the partnership as preparations intensify for the election.
However, the alliance has not yet announced its presidential candidate. Officials said further consultations would determine the flagbearer and the mechanisms through which the two parties will coordinate their campaign activities.
