Congratulations to the winners of the SHE Awards.
Recognizing excellence and achievement is fundamental to raising standards, rising above mediocrity, and ensuring efficient service delivery, the protection of human rights, and the upholding of the rule of law. Without such recognition, progress stalls and human dignity is undermined. These awards are therefore essential in promoting a culture of service, excellence, and accountability in our society.
In this regard, I wish to make special mention of one outstanding awardee: Haddy Mboge Barrow. I have known and worked with this remarkable woman for more than 25 years. From the very first moment I encountered her, she became an inspiration. A self-taught woman of immense intellect and resolve, she has consistently demonstrated clarity, commitment, and courage in standing against sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), harmful traditional practices, and in advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights.
She is among the first Gambian women intellectuals to boldly articulate a truth many fear to confront: that while we may cherish our culture and society, there are beliefs and practices within them that are harmful, unjust, and must be challenged and abandoned. This clarity of thought and moral courage has defined her life’s work.
It is on the basis of this unwavering conviction that Auntie Haddy individually led the initiative to establish the Network Against Gender-based Violence, co-opting committed individuals to build what has today become not just a national institution, but one of the leading voices in the fight against SGBV. At home and abroad, the Network stands as a testament to her vision, hard work, dedication, passion, and enduring legacy.
I therefore congratulate her wholeheartedly and urge all, especially young women, to look up to her as a role model. Auntie Haddy is not only a giant in physical presence, but a giant of self-esteem, confidence, and courage. Her clarity and articulation on issues of gender, diversity, and inclusion are simply astounding. This is a woman who deserves the highest national honours.
I commend the She Awards for recognizing Auntie Haddy and giving her the well-deserved Legacy Award.
