    GAMBIA: Court Observes Visible Burn Marks as Victim Testifies in Hot Oil Assault Trial

    The trial of Jainaba Faye, accused of pouring hot oil on her cook’s face in Bakoteh continues at the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court.

    Mam Jarra Jarjue, the victim stood before Magistrate A. Manneh continued her evidence in chief providing a difficult account of her hospitalisation and permanent traumatisation. She testified and provided a harrowing account of her medical treatment and the lasting physical toll of the alleged assault.

    Mam Jarra Jarjue victim was led by Sergeant 3217 E. Camara in her testimony, Mam Jarra stated that after she was poured the hot oil she was rushed to the Kanifing General Hospital.

    “I was taken to the emergency unit at Kanifing hospital, and around 20:00, I was moved to the surgical unit where I was admitted for one week before being discharged,” she testified.

    Following her release, she (Mam Jarra Jarjue) reported to the police, who accompanied her to obtain a medical certificate. When asked whether she would recognise the medical certificate; Mam Jarra Jarjue positively stated that the medical certificate has her name written.

    The medical certificate became a point of contention when the prosecutor Sergeant 3217 E. Camara moved to tender the medical certificate into evidence. The accused, Jainaba Faye objected, arguing she had never been shown the certificate before.

    However, Magistrate A. Manneh overruled the objection, admitting the document but noting that the court would determine the weight attached to the certificate at the conclusion of the trial.

    The prosecutor then turned his focus to the physical injuries sustained. Sergeant Camara asked if she (Mam Jarra Jarjue) had suffered injuries Mam Jarra Jarjue confirmed that her face remains swollen and marked, adding, “I can’t see clearly now.”

    To corroborate her claims, the prosecution presented photographs taken shortly after the incident. Mam Jarra Jarjue identified herself in the photos, noting she was wearing a pink and yellow dress at the time they were captured on her mobile phone and she printed them.

    Sergeant 3217 E. Camara then applied to tender the photos into evidence, and the accused (Jainaba Faye) offered no objection to the photographs. Magistrate Manneh marked the images as Exhibit PE3.

    Sergeant Camara asked the victim to describe her current condition. Jarjue stated that her face remains swollen and marked

    At the prosecution’s request, Mama Jarra Jarjue was asked to remove her sunglasses and head tie revealing the visible burn marks to the Magistrate and the gallery.

    When questioned about the financial burden of her medical care, Mam Jarjue stated she could not recall the exact total spent on her care because her sister was paying her bills

    At this point, Sergeant 3217 E. Camara told the court that that’s all for the witness. The accused (Jainaba Faye) expected to begin her cross-examination. A. Manneh adjourned the case to 13th March, 2026,
