GAMBIA: Contaminated Syrups Spark Lawsuit: Gambia Takes on Indian Manufacturer

    Share

On Wednesday, the Gambian government declared that it is bringing legal action against an Indian pharmaceutical company that is suspected of exporting contaminated syrups that have been connected to acute kidney injury (AKI) cases in the nation.

The government is working with Indian authorities to bring a formal case against the responsible firm, Vice President Muhammad B.S. Jallow told the National Assembly. “The government is collaborating with Indian law enforcement to bring legal action against the Indian pharmacy company that supplied The Gambia with the deadly syrup,” he stated.

Furthermore, VP Jallow confirmed that Maiden Pharmaceuticals has been placed on the Medicines Control Agency’s (MCA) blacklist, which prevents all of its goods from being sold in the Gambia. He added, “Maiden Pharmaceuticals has been blacklisted by the MCA, and all of its products are no longer available in the Gambian market.”

The vice president also highlighted continuing initiatives to improve the nation’s pharmaceutical control, such as the National Medicine Control Laboratory, which is almost finished and outfitted to improve regulatory monitoring.

“Currently, the Medicine Unrelated Products Act 2014 is under review to ensure MCA operates as an autonomous entity,” he said. “Also, the AKI case is in court, and court rulings will determine further government action regarding justice, compensation, and healing for victims and families.”

With a focus on accountability and public safety, VP Jallow also gave updates on larger government efforts meant to look into and eliminate fraud and corruption in a variety of areas.
