Talib Ahmed Bensouda, the Mayor of the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC), has voiced significant disappointment regarding what he termed the politicisation of recent fire incidents impacting various markets within the municipality.

During a press conference on Friday, Mayor Bensouda spoke about the severe consequences of the fires and called on political figures to approach the situation with the gravity it warrants, rather than exploiting it for partisan advantage.

“I feel compelled to express my disappointment in certain ministers.” I have listened to their remarks and some of the political strategists. Fire should not be subject to political agendas. Damage to Gambians should not be a subject of political debate. “This transcends party lines; it is a national concern. In times of disaster, we must set aside our political differences and unite as Gambians and as leaders to support our people,” he emphasised.

The mayor reiterated KMC’s dedication to collaborating with all stakeholders, including government agencies, to enhance market infrastructure and create safer environments for vendors.

He assured the traders impacted that the council is diligently working to assist them in resuming their business operations swiftly, enabling them to continue providing for their families and communities.

Mayor Bensouda specifically addressed the Sandika market in Serrekunda—one of the council’s key properties—indicating that its current condition is no longer sustainable. The council is drawing on insights from recent incidents to establish enduring solutions, he stated.

He disclosed that senior KMC officials convened with their counterparts from the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) on Thursday, engaging in fruitful discussions focused on mitigating fire-related risks and enhancing safety standards.

“We have already implemented various measures following the incidents and will persist in our efforts not only to avert future fires but also to guarantee that our infrastructure is robust enough to reduce damage when such events take place,” he stated.

Mayor Bensouda concluded by highlighting that protecting public spaces and livelihoods necessitates unity, responsibility, and leadership that goes beyond political divides.
