President Adama Barrow has welcomed the Gambia Democratic Congress into the National People’s Party-led alliance, describing the partnership as a patriotic decision that places national interest above partisan politics.
Speaking at State House on Wednesday during the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the NPP and GDC, Barrow said the agreement was not merely designed to secure electoral victory. He described it as a demonstration of goodwill and a shared commitment to placing The Gambia first.
The President praised GDC leader Mama Kandeh and his party’s leadership for what he called their courage and patriotism. He said political leaders, despite following different paths, had a collective responsibility to protect the country’s peace, security and stability while advancing national development.
Barrow said the alliance would be guided by mutual respect, consultation and a common vision for a stronger and more prosperous country. He assured GDC members that their ideas, experience and energy would be valued within the partnership.
“You are all very warmly welcome. Feel at home. This alliance is your home,” Barrow told the GDC delegation.
The President pledged that the expanded alliance would create more opportunities for young people, empower women, strengthen the economy, improve infrastructure and deliver development to communities without discrimination.
Barrow also invited other political parties, civil society organisations and youth and women’s groups to join the alliance. He stressed that membership was open to Gambians regardless of their political affiliation, ethnicity, religion or gender.
He called on NPP supporters and alliance partners at home and abroad to intensify grassroots mobilisation ahead of the December 5 presidential election, declaring that the alliance represented both the present and future of The Gambia.
