Oumie Nyang, previously a cashier at the Banjul City Council (BCC), faced questioning on Wednesday concerning a revenue shortfall of 185,000 Dalasi that was not deposited into the BCC’s account in February 2020. The investigation occurred at the Local Government Commission of Inquiry.

The witness was first faced with an allegation of an 189,000 Dalasi deficit; however, Nyang clarified that the true amount was 185,000 Dalasi, which the commission acknowledged.

Nyang clarified to the commission’s counsel that she had been unwell and hospitalised during the relevant timeframe. Upon her return to work, she was informed that the deposit had not been made. She verified that the unaccounted sum ought to have been documented in her cash book, which she had given to Mustapha John during her medical leave. “This occurred in February 2020.” Nyang stated, “This should be recorded in my cash book that I handed over to Mustapha John when I was leaving, and I provided the receipts to the collectors.”

She elaborated that she took the initiative to balance her cash book and identified a discrepancy, which she immediately communicated to Mustapha John. The two subsequently verified the records in unison.
“I manage my cash book independently and observed a discrepancy; I notified Mr. John about this, and we reviewed it together,” she added.

Nyang also explained that she informed the Finance Manager, Ebou Drammeh, who assured her that he would bring the matter to the attention of management.

“I also conveyed this to the finance manager, Ebou Drammeh, who mentioned that he would discuss it with the management.” He informed me that Mustapha has contacted the finance director to notify him about my shortage. In June, she stated that she received a transfer letter indicating her transfer to the record’s office.
