Yesterday, the Drug Law Enforcement Agency incinerated significant amounts of confiscated drugs, including cannabis, cocaine, skunk, and kush, among others.

The drugs were destroyed in Bakau on Old Cape Point Road. Demba Ceesay, the Director General of DLEAG, noted that the activity is an annual exercise and is part of the events commemorating the International Day Against Illicit Drug Abuse and Trafficking, commonly referred to as World Drug Day, which is observed on June 26th each year.

Daily, DLEAG confiscates substantial amounts of drugs of different kinds and undertakes meticulous efforts to handle these substances and the individuals linked to them. This yearly exercise seeks to showcase public accountability and transparency in the management of drugs from the moment of arrest to their destruction. The DG emphasised that DLEAG management consistently upholds the security and integrity of exhibits by implementing a strong and highly secure chain of custody for confiscated drugs.

Mr. Faal, the Board Chairman of DLEAG, remarked that over the years, the agency has crafted and executed strategic initiatives that have significantly enhanced its administrative, operational, and technical capabilities, thereby fulfilling its mandate and effectively achieving its organisational goals.

The trafficking and abuse of illicit drugs persist in causing significant harm to individuals, families, communities, and countries worldwide. A significant number of individuals worldwide, especially among the younger population, have developed a dependency on drugs. Mr. Faal emphasised that it is our shared duty to establish safe, secure, and drug-free environments for children and youth to thrive and reach their full potential.
The scientific unit of DLEAG also conducted tests on the burnt illicit drugs to ascertain their composition and potential effects on users.
