In the days following their nominations, a number of candidates for President-elect Donald Trump’s new government have received threats, according to a statement released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States.
The FBI stated on Wednesday that it is working with its law enforcement partners to address the many bomb threats and swatting activities that have been directed at incoming administration nominees and appointments.
“As always, we urge the public to report anything they believe to be suspicious to law enforcement right away, as we take all possible threats seriously.”
The brief statement confirmed rumours circulating inside the Trump transition team.
Trump spokesperson Karoline Leavitt earlier in the day said that those targeted included cabinet nominees Lee Zeldin and Elise Stefanik.
She stated in a news statement that “violent, un-American threats were made against the lives of several of President Trump’s Cabinet nominees and Administration appointees last night and this morning, as well as against their families.”
