SENEGAL: Senegal’s 2025 AFCON Dreams Dim: Walid Acherchour Explains Why

Walid Acherchour, a French-Algerian journalist, believes Senegal won’t compete in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which will take place in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 19, 2026. Walid Acherchour concurs that the Lions of Teranga have the strongest team on paper, but he believes Mohamed Salah’s Egypt will win in the end.

“There is no chance of Senegal winning the AFCON. similar to Morocco. Egypt is my option, though I was undecided. That’s how I feel. because it is quite difficult to eliminate this Egyptian team from a competition. They have only lost on penalties in the last few years. The Egyptian league is still incredibly powerful, particularly in African competitions. On the Winamax FC show, Walid Acherchour made the prediction that Omar Marmoush and Mohamed Salah, who were anonymous for the first half of the season, would arrive in Morocco with their teeth bared.

Even worse, the pundit and journalist believes that Pape Thiaw’s team will not advance past the quarterfinals. “I anticipate that Senegal and Tunisia will face off in the quarterfinals. The Tunisians will defeat the Senegalese with their defensive sturdiness,” he predicts.

Acherchour claimed that a team from the north of the continent would win the final during this episode devoted just to predictions for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. “I have no doubt that a North African nation will win this AFCON. Because of the pressure, Algeria’s continued lag, and Tunisia’s offensive issues, I don’t see Morocco. However, I do see Egypt,” he continued.

The journalist has some concerns about Senegal. “The Senegal team is intimidating, but a squad alone isn’t enough to win an AFCON. I have a couple of questions. Pape Thiaw is the subject of the first. How is he going to handle his first AFCON? Although he was brought on as a temporary coach, he has managed the issue effectively since his employment. The second query relates to Sadio Mané’s management. There are many possibilities, particularly in attack, so we’ll have to see how he handles Mané and their responsibilities within the team, much like with Mahrez and Algeria,” he says.

It should be mentioned that the other three consultants on the Winamax FC panel—Tidiany M’bo, Elton Mokolo, and Najim Medini—all selected Senegal as the eventual victor in their forecasts.
