Following the defeat of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, Ghana’s primary rival, former President John Dramani Mahama emerged victorious in the country’s presidential election.

At a press conference on Sunday, Bawumia declared, “The people of Ghana have spoken, the people have voted for change at this time, and we respect it with all humility.”

The loss in Saturday’s election puts an end to President Nana Akufo-Addo’s two terms in office with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), which was characterised by Ghana’s worst economic crisis in recent memory, which included soaring inflation and a debt default.

Bawumia claimed that in order to congratulate him, he called Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Earlier, NDC spokesperson Sammy Gyamfi informed reporters that Mahama received 56.3 percent of the vote, compared to 41.3 percent for Bawumia, according to the party’s internal analysis of the data.

Gyamfi declared, “It is very evident that the people of this country have voted for change.”

Mahama won the presidency “decisively,” according to the vice president.
