Why encourage Parliament to accept the illegal 2024 draft constitution from the executive branch and ignore the legitimate 2020 draft constitution?
When the process is flawed, the entire outcome becomes illegitimate. We lost a legitimate outcome by not following due process and the rule of law, and anarchy will likely follow!
Now, tell us which moral citizen or credible organisation will campaign for an illegitimate process and ignore due process and the rule of law.
Why campaign for an illegal process to satisfy Barrow and Cabal and ignore the credible 2020 draft constitution that most Gambians want?
Suppose we allow the process to continue, leading to the adoption of the 2024 draft. In that case, we lose our democracy by giving Barrow absolute executive power over the people because the 2024 draft is Barrows’s draft, not the people’s draft!
Critically think of what a good article in Barrow’s 2024 draft that isn’t in the 2020 people’s draft constitution. The two good proposals in the Barrow 2024 draft are the term limits and the absolute majority clause for electing a president, also enshrined in the People’s 2020 draft constitution.
The rest of the proposals in the Barrow draft are self-serving. They protect him and his Cabal from Accountability, give him far-reaching unilateral power to control other branches and agencies of our democratic administration, undermine our democracy’s due process and rule of law, and allow him to become an autocrat!
When we allow Barrow and his Cabal to achieve their objective, it shall have far-reaching consequences empowering lousy governance, and Barrow shall use the same executive privilege, applying precisely the exact manoeuvring to remove or ignore the remaining mechanism in place to hold him accountable for pursuing his selfish interest
Barrow administration is applying all lame strategies that the weak and opportunistic will fall for, which the copycat of the USA White House Correspondents dinner after getting the neo-colonial agencies like the UNDP, the conforming supposedly National Independent Commission like the Human Rights Commission and some of the Civil Society organisations like Gambia ParticipateS onboard their illegal bandwagon campaigning for Barrow to undermine our democracy to get Barrow what he wants! Why not stick to the People’s Draft 2020 constitution and advise Barrow to respect due process and the rule of law? Why must you be an accomplice of Barrow to undermine the due process rule of law in undermining our democracy?
Why does the Civil Society Organisation (Gambia Participates) front the Campaign with billboards? Do they receive funding from UNDP or any other organisations?
Why is the National Human Rights Commission helping validate a flawed process that ignores due process and the rule of law and undermines our evolving democratic process for President Barrow’s self-centred interest? Are Chairman Emanuel Daniel Joof and the commissioner securing their job, guaranteeing renewal?
We appeal to all moral citizens and Parliamentarians to oppose the Barrow 2024 draft constitution and call for reintroducing the people’s 2020 draft constitution that Barrow has sabotaged. History is in the making.
