    GAMBIA: What are the Causes of the Agricultural Sector’s Underfunding?

    Dr. Ousman Gajigo, in his piece “2024 Budget: Misplaced Priorities,” notes that the budget for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs surpasses D1.8 billion. The funding saw a 69% increase compared to last year. It exceeds the Ministry of Agriculture’s D 782 million recurrent budget by D1 billion. How can any Gambian government be serious about the development needs of the country and provide such a misallocation of our limited resources?

    An in-depth examination of the budget reveals a lack of fiscal responsibility. Our US embassy is in Washington DC, and our UN mission is in New York City. Given The Gambia’s economic predicament, it would have been smart to combine these two cities into a single assignment because they’re only 3 hours apart by rail, wrote Dr. Ousman Gajigo.
