In this interview with AG Radio yesterday, Honourable Lamin J. Sanneh, the national assembly member for Brikama South, expresses concern over the absence of a land policy in The Gambia. He is a strong advocate for land policy. He expressed that the absence of a land policy is quite unfortunate. During his time in the 5th legislature, he participated in the local government lands and ombudsman’s policy led by Honourable Amul Nyassi. They traveled across the country to investigate land-related crimes, highlighting that this issue is a potential time-bomb for the nation. If not addressed appropriately, it could lead to significant unrest.
According to Honourable Sanneh, in both 2020 and 2021, he visited the lands minister to express the need for action so that lawmakers could begin working on the land policy and pedestrian markings. This policy would involve dividing the land into industrial, residential, and agricultural zones, as land developers are currently unregulated. Since 2017, we have been discussing the challenges related to this land policy.
One can envision the multitude of Estate Developers in this country who are significantly intruding upon our agricultural lands and even our industrial lands. We have discussed the challenges of Calista mapping that will assist the digital economy in the process of digitalizing our resources and revenues. He emphasized that these matters are extremely significant, yet as of today, no action has been taken regarding them, says Honourable Sanneh.
