Following the deaths of the two current councilors earlier this year, the Independent Electoral Commission declared on Wednesday that it will hold councilor by-elections in the Bantanjang and Kaiaf wards on January 10, 2026.

Following the deaths of Hamat Ceesay of Kaiaf Ward in the Mansakonko Area Council and Araba Bojang of Bantanjang Ward in the Brikama Area Council, the vacancies were created. According to the IEC, the elections are being held in compliance with Local Government Act Section 23.

In Sibanor and Mansakonko, the commission’s regional offices will be accepting nominations for potential candidates from December 25 to 27 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to the IEC. Starting on December 4, nomination papers will be accessible at the same places.

“Nomination papers can be collected from the said regional offices from 4th December, 2025, onwards. The campaign period for the said elections shall start from 29th December, 2025, to 8th January, 2026,” the commission noted.

The commission states that the marketing period will begin on December 29 and end on January 8.

The IEC, which is tasked with overseeing all public elections, underlined its ongoing dedication to guaranteeing a peaceful and transparent process, which includes monitoring voter registration, civic education, and political campaign conduct.
