UDP’s Deputy Secretary for External Affairs, Mr. Lamin Manneh, in an interview with A G Radio has advised President Barrow against running for a third term, but if he does, he will face a crushing defeat in 2026. Mr. Manneh stated that it would be better for him to depart peacefully after his defeat and avoid doing what Yahya Jammeh did in 2016.
According to a research released in May of this year by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), an African organization dedicated to improving human security on the continent, President Adama Barrow’s candidacy for president in 2026 would exacerbate political tensions in the nation.
“He hasn’t been definitive on a possible 2026 candidacy, but the potential for a controversial and destabilizing third term cannot be ruled out,” the ISS, which is renowned for its respected independent and authoritative research, expert policy analysis, and advice, added. However, a second Barrow candidacy would undoubtedly increase tensions and lead to political issues that would necessitate the intervention of the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas), as was the case during the post-election crises in December 2016 and January 2017.
If Barrow chooses not to run, however, ISS stated that this “may ease tensions and give a political push for resuming the transition.” Barrow would have to choose a successor in such a case, which would undoubtedly cause rifts inside his National People’s Party as well as among friends who might support certain candidates or have presidential aspirations.
