GAMBIA: UDP Leader Darboe Urges Strong Youth Turnout in Voter Registration Exercise

United Democratic Party leader ANM Ousainu Darboe on Thursday urged Gambians, particularly young people, to sign up for voter ID cards, emphasizing that taking part in elections is key to influencing who leads the country.

Speaking in a national address on April 9, Darboe described the ongoing voter registration exercise as a crucial chance for citizens to secure their “voice” in shaping the nation’s future.

“This is what allows you to choose the government you want,” he said. “It gives you the authority to put leaders in place who will manage the affairs of this country.”

He cautioned that opting out of the process could have consequences, arguing that those who do not register or vote may indirectly enable poor leadership. “When you don’t vote, you leave the decision to others—and that can result in a government that doesn’t serve the people well,” he said.

Darboe also raised concerns about the improper use of attestations during registration, warning that anyone who falsely vouches for an ineligible person could face legal action, including charges such as perjury.

Turning to the mood of the country, he pointed to what he described as growing frustration among young people, referencing conversations on both social and traditional media that highlight concerns about corruption and governance.

“Young people want change,” he said. “There’s a strong feeling that corruption has become so widespread it’s damaging the very foundation of our society.”

He encouraged young voters to stay engaged, stressing that registering and casting a ballot are important steps toward addressing these issues. “This is not the time to sit back,” he added. “You need to take action if you want to see things improve.”

Darboe ended his remarks by calling on voters to back his party and its presidential candidate, saying the United Democratic Party is ready to deliver the change many Gambians are hoping for.
