Eight opposition groups including parties and political movements are expected to formalise a new alliance on Friday, August 7, 2026, in what organisers describe as a significant step ahead of The Gambia’s 2026 and 2027 general elections.
The Gambia First Coalition (GFC) and United Democratic Party (UDP) Alliance said a memorandum of understanding will be signed from 4 p.m. at Jama Hall, Kairaba Hotel. A joint press briefing is scheduled immediately after the ceremony.
The planned alliance brings together six registered political parties and two political movements. Its members are the Alliance for Democracy and Development (ADD), Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC), Gambia Alliance for National Development (GANU), Gambia for All (GFA), Gambian People’s Advancement Party (GPAP), Golden Era Party (GEP), People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and United Democratic Party (UDP).
According to a media invitation issued by the organisers, the agreement is intended to establish a common opposition platform ahead of the forthcoming polls. The coalition said the arrangement will remain open to other political parties and movements willing to join.
The organisers described the alliance as a significant development in The Gambia’s democratic process. Although the invitation identifies participating organisations, it does not outline leadership arrangements, candidate-selection rules, campaign strategy or a policy programme. Those issues may become key points of interest at the post-signing briefing.
Editors, news directors and journalists from media houses across The Gambia have been invited to cover the event. Organisers said broad media coverage would help keep the public informed about the development and its possible implications for the country’s democratic process.
