Speaking to AG Radio, members of the Coalition of Progressive Gambians (CoPG) articulate their position to the citizens of The Gambia in anticipation of the reintroduction of the 2024 draft constitution, known as the Adama Barrow constitution.
The CoPG members asserted that the 2020 draft constitution should not be compared to the 2024 draft constitution, as the 2020 draft aligns with democratic principles and is deemed the most beneficial for Gambia and its citizens.
The 2020 draft, referred to as the people’s constitution by CoPG, not only ensures robust institutions but also aids the president in becoming a more effective leader. On the contrary, the 2024 draft, referred to as Adama Barrow’s constitution, centralizes all authority in the hands of the president. This draft, if approved, could transform Adama Barrow into a full-fledged dictator.
The 2024 draft is perceived by many Gambians as an insult to our shared intellect. This draft prioritizes Adama Barrow and his family, neglecting the needs of the people. A significant number of Gambians view this contentious draft constitution as a reflection of Adama Barrow’s unfavorable intentions for the Gambia. CoPG urges all Gambians to either reject this draft or modify it to align more closely with the 2020 draft.
