Mr. Edi Jallow criticises the inadequate planning by the authorities that is contributing to the environmental destruction in The Gambia. Mr. Edi Jallow, speaking to AG Radio, stated that our natural resources represent our wealth, as we can transform these resources into wealth that ultimately benefits us all.
Mr. Jallow holds the politicians accountable, noting that many are solely focused on getting elected, and once in office, they neglect the very constituents who supported them. If we neglect the environment, experiencing a healthy life will become impossible.
The removal of trees has led to significant ecological harm, contributing to the daily heat we encounter. We are destroying our forest that was once abundant with countless medicinal herbs. Mr. Jallow stated that some of these herbs might have been utilised for both domestic purposes and international trade, thereby generating income for our country.
We need to implement effective policies to safeguard the environment instead of selling our forests. Monkey Park is up for sale, and Salagi Forest Park is also on the market. Behind Abuko Nature Reserve and across from it, new stores are being constructed, and a similar situation is occurring in Nyambai Forest, leading to environmental degradation. Just as the forest requires carbon dioxide, we too depend on the oxygen generated by the trees in our forests for healthy living. Mr. Jallow stated that the destruction of the forests has grave consequences for our health.
