GAMBIA: The Gloves Are Off: Ceesay Targets Opponents in Scathing Attack

During a National People’s Party (NPP) rally in Sukuta, Information Minister and Citizens’ Alliance (CA) leader Dr. Ismaila Ceesay gave a compelling speech, claiming that President Adama Barrow faces no credible challengers as the 2026 presidential elections approach.

Speaking to a large gathering of NPP supporters, Dr. Ceesay, representing a party allied with the ruling NPP, methodically refuted the political credibility of prominent opposition figures and parties.

He contended that Ousainou Darboe, the leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP) and a seasoned political figure, “is advanced in age and should retire from politics.” He proceeded to speak to the People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS), highlighting that its leader, Halifa Sallah, has made a public announcement stating he will not run in the upcoming election, effectively eliminating them from the race.

Dr. Ceesay directed criticism towards Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) leader Mama Kandeh, claiming that he “cannot manage his own party.” He proceeded to make sharp comments regarding former Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC) lead counsel and 2021 independent presidential candidate Essa Faal, claiming that Faal “does not tell the truth” and challenging his maturity, rhetorically asking the audience, “Can we entrust the country to that person?”

The CA leader continued to express disapproval of Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda, asserting that he is “surrounded by individuals of largely mediocre caliber.” Dr. Ceesay mentioned the mayor’s associates, such as Mc Cham Jr. and Ebrima Dibba, to emphasize his argument.

“Who constitutes the opposition?” Dr. Ceesay posed a rhetorical question, emphasizing that no political rival presents a significant threat to President Barrow’s leadership.

His comments signal a bold and confrontational start to what is anticipated to be an intense campaign season leading up to the 2026 elections. The opposition parties have not yet provided formal responses to Dr. Ceesay’s remarks.
