The Ministry of interior issued a statement expressing concern regarding the troubling allegations that surfaced after the recent public destruction of confiscated illegal drugs by the Drug Law Enforcement Agency of The Gambia (DLEAG).The statement highlighted that the yearly public destruction exercise aims to showcase transparency and accountability in the management of seized drugs, from the moment of arrest through to their disposal. The Ministry, as the governing authority for DLEAG, denounced any actions or failures that could jeopardise the nation’s dedication to a drug-free Gambia.
The Ministry of Interior has raised concerns regarding the troubling allegations of damaging activities that have emerged following the recent destruction of confiscated prohibited drugs and related substances by the Drug Law Enforcement Agency of The Gambia (DLEAG). The public destruction of seized prohibited drugs is an annual event designed to showcase accountability and transparency in the management of drugs from the moment of arrest to their eventual destruction. The Ministry responsible for overseeing and supervising this Agency (DLEAG) has firmly condemned any actions or omissions that undermine our dedication to a drug-free Gambia,” they stated. In light of the gravity of the allegations, the Ministry has instructed the Gambia Police Force to carry out a comprehensive investigation. This investigation aims to reveal the truth, pinpoint those involved, and guarantee that justice is achieved. The Ministry underscored that any instance of misconduct, negligence, or complicity will be met with zero tolerance, as such actions could undermine the public’s confidence in the nation’s institutions.
Given the seriousness of these allegations, the Ministry has instructed The Gambia Police Force to initiate an immediate and comprehensive investigation. This investigation will thoroughly explore every avenue to uncover the truth, identify all individuals involved, and ensure that justice is ultimately achieved. The Interior Ministry stated, “The Ministry will not tolerate any form of misconduct, negligence, or complicity that may undermine the trust of The Gambian people in our institutions.”The Ministry emphasised its unwavering commitment to a ‘zero-tolerance’ policy regarding drug-related activities, reaffirming its dedication to enhancing efforts against the drug issue.
