GAMBIA: The Gambia has the Potential to Excel by Effectively Utilising the River Gambia

Mr. Edi Jallow expressed concerns during the AG Radio Degga Ak Deggu program on Sunday evening regarding the absence of truth and truthfulness in both our political landscape and society at large. A leader must embody honesty to effectively govern. Mr. Edi Jallow notes that the small nation of Gambia possesses numerous resources that are not found in other African countries, particularly highlighting the significance of the “River Gambia.” The sole river in West Africa that allows ocean-going vessels to navigate directly all the way to Basse.

Mr. Jallow stated that our river is a natural resource bestowed upon us by a higher power. If Abu Dhabi can successfully build a seaport in a desert environment, then Gambia has the potential to excel by effectively utilising the River Gambia. The government of Senegal, led by PASTEF, has organised the country into eight regions, in addition to the six existing regions, with Casamance and Northern Senegal situated near Gambia. The question to be answered is what actions Gambia should undertake to capitalise on these opportunities. The answer lies within the River Gambia.

It is advisable for the government to engage with our development partners to explore the possibility of constructing a seaport in both Kaur and Basse. This approach eliminates the need for traders to travel to Banjul, allowing those in Kaur to conduct their trading locally and those in Basse to do the same in their area. The seaport in Kaur could serve as a trade route to Central Senegal, Casamance, and Guinea Bissau when this occurs. A seaport in Basse could function as a trade route to both the Upper River Region and Tamba Counda, enhancing accessibility to Mali through Niani, Karantaba, and Sarre Ngange.

Mr. Jallow asserts that Gambia has the potential to become the gateway to West Africa. The River Gambia possesses significant potential. The interest of Europeans in the River Gambia stemmed from its potential; however, it was regrettably exploited for purposes such as the transportation of slaves, among other uses.
