The contentious 2024 draft constitution bill, postponed in March for additional deliberations, will return to the Assembly on July 7, as part of the agenda for the upcoming legislative session commencing on June 16.
The second reading of the bill, originally scheduled for March 27, was postponed at the request of the Ministry of Justice to enable “broader stakeholder consultations” in the subsequent session.
The bill requires the support of a minimum of 42 members to advance to subsequent stages, potentially facilitating a referendum. The ruling National People’s Party and its allies currently lack sufficient votes to pass the bill and are seeking support from opposition party members, most of whom have pledged to reject it.
