GAMBIA: Suspect Told Court that the Killer of the PIU Officers is Known to the Police.

Ousainou Bojang, the man charged with the murder of two police officers and the wounding of a third in 2023, stated in court on Monday that the police should seek out the true perpetrators of the crime, asserting that he is not responsible for their deaths. He was proceeding with his testimony before Justice Ebrima Jaiteh at the High Court in Banjul.

The suspect maintained that he did not murder the PIU officers and claimed that the Anti-Crime Unit of the police is aware of the identity of their killer.

The suspect informed the court that this fact is evident to the police, as during the investigations at Sukuta Police Station, he was presented before seven individuals, whom the police asserted were eyewitnesses; however, none of them claimed to recognise or identify him as the shooter.

He revealed that several of the eye witnesses described the individual they observed as being short and dressed in a white kaftan.

The suspect claimed that Commissioner Sowe of the Anti-Crime Unit deceived the Gambia police command.

“Following the parade at Sukuta Police Station, I was taken to the Anti-Crime Unit where I was handcuffed. When Ebou Sowe arrived, I enquired if he had come to release me. He responded that he could not do so, as it could lead to his own death,” the accused stated in court.

He went on to reveal that Ebou Sowe made coffee for him, which he consumed, and soon after, he fell asleep, only to awaken in a cell.

“Ebou Sowe took my smartphone, asked me to unlock it, after which he went through my WhatsApp messages and realised that everything I had said about my relationship with my white lady friend and his boss, Katherine, was true,” Ousainou Bojang said.

He informed the court that the investigators who visited his home in Brufut removed numerous items, including a diary containing the pin code to his smartphone.

At this point, Lawyer Lamin J. Darboe, the defence counsel, requested the court to require the prosecution to provide all items that the police seized from the accused person’s home during the investigation.

The presiding judge, Justice Ebrima Jaiteh, approved the application and instructed that the Commissioner of the Anti-Crime Unit of the Gambia Police Force, or his subordinates, present all items seized from Ousainou Bojang’s residence in Brufut to the court by the next adjourned date.

The hearing is set to continue on the 24th.
