GAMBIA: Sacked Senior Lecturers sue UTG at Kanifing Court

    Share

The University of The Gambia and its acting registrar, Bobo Baldeh, are being sued at the Kanifing Court by two senior teachers who were fired by the university for “wrongfully terminating” their employment contracts.

It is anticipated that the matter will be heard again on December 9, 2024.
Under the representation of attorney Malik HB Jallow, Dr. Alieu Gibba and Professor Matarr Njie are asking the court to rule that the University of The Gambia’s dismissal of them was “unlawful, unfair, malicious, and repugnant to the principles of natural justice” and that it ultimately amounted to a breach of their employment contract.

Along with their “immediate reinstatement” by the UTG, they also want the court to order them to pay D5 million in damages to make up for the distress and harm to their reputation that resulted from their “unlawful dismissal and payment of administrative and legal fee of D200,000,” among other things.

Njie is an Associate Professor of Economics with 19 years of cumulative teaching experience at the UTG, while Gibba has a PhD in Business and Agricultural Economics.

The academics’ “unauthorised public statements and unfounded allegations” against the University of the Gambia’s promotion procedure, among other things, “tarnish the reputation” of the university, according to the UTG’s dismissal letter.
