The Coalition of Progressive Gambians (CoPG) has called on voters to reject what it called empty political promises and make responsible, well-informed decisions as The Gambia approaches the general elections in 2026.
Celestine Kujabi, the coalition’s secretary general, said that political decision-making has too frequently been influenced by rhetoric rather than substance and told reporters during a press briefing on Monday that the upcoming election year should encourage reflection on both past and current governance.
“This is an election year, and we hope Gambians have learned from the past and the present,” Mr. Kujabi said. “We urge citizens to be responsible in making their choices. We put emphasis on the fact that words are empty; Gambians need to avoid leaning on empty promises without reason.”
Mr. Kujabi emphasized that citizens have an obligation to hold public authorities accountable and restated the coalition’s dedication to openness, accountability, and good governance. “As we dawn into 2026, another important year in our political calendar, we are obliged to remind, renew, and reassure Gambians of our commitment to holding public servants and officials accountable,” he said.
The secretary general also emphasized irregular migration as a risky practice that has lost many young Gambians their lives and prospects, highlighting it as a major national worry. In order to address the root problems that lead young people to choose dangerous migratory routes, he advocated for sustainable economic possibilities and efficient policy solutions.
Mr. Kujabi expressed his sympathies to families who had recently lost loved ones, saying, “The recent plight of illegal migration embarked upon by our youth population is a great loss to our country.”
He urged Gambians to support the coalition’s continued advocacy for constitutional reforms, effective governance, and increased public participation in national affairs.
“We invite all Gambians to join this journey toward a just, equitable, and prosperous nation,” he said.
