The Office of the President released a statement confirming Sierra Leonean President Dr. Julius Maada Bio’s meeting with President Adama Barrow, but without disclosing the visit’s precise agenda, after hours of speculations over the visit’s purpose.

The statement instead emphasized the longstanding bilateral ties between Sierra Leone and The Gambia and President Bio’s current position as Chair of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The press statement states that the visit coincides with a pivotal moment for the sub-region, as ECOWAS faces issues such as young unemployment, political transitions, economic integration, peace and security, and climate change.

The statement said, “President Barrow looks forward to having productive conversations with President Bio during his term as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority and commends his leadership and vision for the region.”

The press release also highlighted the close historical, cultural, and social ties between the two countries, pointing out that they have both supported regional cooperation, democracy, and peace. Discussions will aim to investigate new opportunities for cooperation in the fields of trade, investment, cultural diplomacy, education, tourism, and energy, it was noted.

Both nations have backed regional collaboration, promoting democracy and promoting stability and peace. The meeting today will deepen this relationship and investigate new avenues for collaboration in the areas of trade, investment, cultural diplomacy, education, tourism, and energy, the statement said.

Additionally, the Gambia acknowledged Sierra Leone’s position on the global scene, especially President Bio’s leadership as Chair of the African Union Committee of Ten (C10), which promotes fair representation of Africans on the UN Security Council. His “unwavering commitment” to enhancing Africa’s voice in international governance was commended by President Barrow.

A “testament to the enduring friendship” between the two countries and their shared ambition for a peaceful, prosperous, and united West Africa, the statement said of the visit. As it came to an end, President Barrow wished President Bio luck in his role as ECOWAS Chair and reiterated The Gambia’s willingness to collaborate closely with Sierra Leone for the benefit of both countries’ citizens and the whole region.
