President Adama Barrow has conveyed optimism regarding his prospects for re-election in the 2026 presidential race, highlighting his administration’s development initiatives as crucial elements that will contribute to his bid for another term.
In an interview with QTV on Thursday, President Barrow highlighted that his government has effectively implemented numerous infrastructure and social projects for Gambians, leading him to believe that voters will choose to maintain the current leadership.
In response to the recent Afrobarometer survey revealing that 77 percent of Gambians feel the country is moving in the wrong direction, the president characterised the findings as subjective.
“This is entirely a matter of personal perspective.” There are various perspectives and distinct organisations. There is an organisation known as EIU, which has a report that spans approximately 19 to 29 pages. The report determined that I will emerge victorious in the elections. These are merely perspectives. I am confident that I am doing a good job. “I believe I have not engaged in any actions that would justify the Gambian people dismissing me,” he stated.
In defence of his administration’s achievements, President Barrow emphasised that he has operated within legal parameters and has not abused his executive authority.
“I believe we are steering this nation towards a positive path.” We are advancing this nation. We are executing significant projects, including road infrastructure, electricity, schools, and health facilities. A one hundred ten percent salary increase. By January, many individuals will find themselves quite wealthy. We have seen an increase in our collection. In comparing 2024 and 2023, our collection shows a difference of approximately five billion. This year, we have exceeded our target. “I believe we are performing well; that’s my perspective,” he explained.
Expressing his optimism for the upcoming election, President Barrow stated, “With all these achievements, do you really think people will choose someone else over me?” I disagree. Ultimately, the decision lies with the Gambian people, but I am quite optimistic about my chances in 2026, potentially with an even larger margin this time. “I will overcome my father once more,” the president declared.
His comments demonstrate his steadfast confidence in the achievements of his administration and his chances for re-election.
