President Adama Barrow has reaffirmed The Gambia’s commitment to democracy and national unity, emphasising the country’s resilience in the face of political and economic challenges while celebrating significant achievements over the past eight years.

During the country’s 60th Independence Anniversary celebrations, President Barrow delivered these remarks at McCarthy Square in Banjul. The event saw participation from political party leaders, cabinet ministers, former government officials, and international delegates, including the Presidents of Senegal and Guinea-Bissau.

In the face of political upheaval, economic challenges, and various hardships, President Barrow highlighted the unwavering dedication of Gambians to justice and democracy, showcasing their unity during pivotal times.

“Today, we can confidently reflect on the past eight years, recognising our accomplishments with gratitude. The 2016 Presidential Election, a pivotal moment in history, showcased the strength of unity and shared resolve in influencing the democratic trajectory of a nation. “This spirit ought to be fortified to unite us more closely as we advance boldly into the future,” he declared.

President Barrow highlighted the achievements of his administration since taking office in 2017, pointing to improvements in national reconciliation, democratic governance, and economic development. He highlighted that the government’s ten-year National Development Plan (YIRIWAA) aims to promote sustainable economic growth, enhance infrastructure development, ensure food security, develop human capital, and provide social protection for vulnerable populations.

In light of global economic challenges, he observed that The Gambia’s economy has shown impressive resilience.“The growth rate of five point eight percent (5.8%) in 2024, along with the reduction in headline inflation from eighteen percent (18%) in 2023 to ten percent (10%) in 2024, represents significant accomplishments.” “It is anticipated that our economic performance will enhance from 2025 onward,” he emphasised.

This year’s independence theme highlights the significance of unity, self-sufficiency, and practical approaches to addressing national issues. He advocated for a greater dependence on domestic resources to reform and enhance institutions for improved governance and service delivery.
