On Monday, President Adama Barrow urged Gambians to renew their dedication to peaceful engagement and lawful expression, emphasizing that while the Constitution safeguards the right to protest, it must be exercised with responsibility.

“The right to protest peacefully is a fundamental aspect of our democracy—enshrined in our Constitution and upheld by this government,” President Barrow stated in a televised address to the nation.

He warned, however, that violence, property destruction, and threats to public safety jeopardize the freedoms citizens aim to safeguard and will be addressed with the full extent of the law.

The president emphasized the concerns of young people, whom he referred to as “the heart and hope of this country,” urging them to express their grievances through constructive and lawful channels. He emphasized the significance of democratic institutions—such as the National Assembly, the courts, and civil society organizations—as valid channels for addressing complaints and resolving disputes.

Barrow reassured Gambians, especially the youth, that his administration is attentive to their concerns and prioritizing their aspirations within the national agenda. “Our government is committed to open dialogue: let us collaborate through established institutions and youth platforms to address concerns in a peaceful and constructive manner,” he stated.

While recognizing that the majority of citizens communicate their views peacefully, Barrow cautioned that a small fraction might seek to take advantage of these instances for their own personal or political benefit. He urged Gambians to resist division and unrest, emphasizing the importance of maintaining national unity and progress.

The president reiterated his administration’s dedication to safeguarding lawful rights while holding accountable those who incite or participate in violence. He called on the security forces to maintain their professionalism, exercise restraint, and uphold the rights of citizens.

“Uphold our Constitution, act with wisdom, and protect public order in a manner that reflects the trust Gambians have placed in you,” he conveyed to the security services.

Barrow wrapped up by highlighting the collective duty towards peace, stability, and development. “As we progress, let us be guided by unity, mutual respect, and a steadfast commitment to our national values.” “We will create the Gambia of our dreams only by coming together, engaging peacefully, and embracing our shared responsibilities,” he stated.

The president expressed his condolences to the family of Omar Badjie, stating, “Every life lost is a loss for our entire nation, and each injury is a reminder of the preciousness of peace.”
